Direct Sales

The Office of Tourism has a very active direct sales effort to promote Connecticut to the group tour and travel trade markets domestically and internationally.  This is accomplished through membership in organizations such as the American Bus Association, National Tour Association, U.S. Travel Association, The Receptive Service Association (tour operators working with inbound international groups) and Discover New England.

Many of these associations sponsor annual trade shows in a marketplace environment.  The shows consist of educational seminars and business sessions including prescheduled one-to-one appointments with tour operators, group tour leaders, travel agents and media.  Cooperative opportunities are available to Connecticut industry partners for many of the shows. Sales leads are available upon request.



SARATOGA, NY                                                                  SEPT. 15 – 16, 2015

All Inclusive Group Travel Trade Show and Seminar Program offered to destinations, hotels and attractions with the opportunity to establish contact with Motorcoach/Tour Operators and International Receptive Operators and key Group Leaders.


ATLANTIC CITY, NEW JERSEY                                       NOV. 10 – 11, 2015

A trade show where top Group Tour Operators bring bus loads of their top tour planners to pick up information for future travel.


LOUISVILLE, KY                                                                JAN. 9 – 12, 2016

This is an appointment taking convention, where you have 7 minute pre-scheduled meetings, face to face with tour operators and receptive operators.  More than 3,500 tour operators, suppliers and exhibitors as well as 800 pre-qualified operators, attend the annual Marketplace.

LANCASTER, PA                                                                 MAR. 30 - 31, 2016

Two trade shows, back to back, that put travel supplier members directly in touch with bus operator group leaders and motorcoach operators,  who bring in group leaders looking to find fun and exciting places to travel.

Showcases New England as a travel destination to the domestic market.  Pre-scheduled meetings with qualified tour operators from across the United States, to assist with planning their New England group tours.


*WTM & ITB are arranged through Discover New England.  Connecticut attends as part of the DNE booth.  All the International shows are appointment taking conferences.


LONDON, ENGLAND                                                         NOV. 2 – 5, 2015

More than 50,000 senior travel industry professionals, government ministers and international press attend.  WTM presents a diverse range of destinations and industry sectors to UK and International travel professionals. COT booth partnership with Discover New England.


BERLIN, GERMANY                                                          MAR. 9 – 13, 2016

As the Leading Travel Trade Show, ITB Berlin is the foremost business platform for global touristic offers.  There are 5 continents, 185 countries and 850 qualified buyers who attend. COT booth partnership with Discover New England.


NEWPORT, RI                                                                      APRIL 4 – 6, 2016

Discover New England (DNE) is the official tourism organization representing the New England region to the international market.  DNE is a nonprofit cooperative marketing entity funded by the participating states of Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, and Vermont.  DNE’s primary mission is to increase tourism to the New England region from overseas markets — with a particular focus on the core markets of the United Kingdom/Ireland, Germany and Japan.

DNE works with the international press and travel writers and arranges FAM (familiarization) Tours throughout New England.


NEW ORLEANS, LA                                                                       JUNE 18 – 22, 2016

U.S. Travel Association’s IPW (formerly called International Pow Wow) is the travel industry's premier international marketplace and the largest generator of travel to the U.S. - it is NOT a typical trade show. In just three days of intensive pre-scheduled business appointments, more than 1,000 U.S. travel organizations from every region of the USA (representing all industry category components), and more than 1,300 international and domestic buyers from more than 70 countries conduct business negotiations that result in the generation of more than $4.7 billion in future Visit USA travel. At IPW, buyers and sellers are able to conduct business that would otherwise be generated only through an exhaustive number of around-the-world trips. Due to the importance of IPW for establishing international trade contacts, COT will have a  booth and also share a  booth with Discover New England.

Direct sales efforts also include familiarization tours, sales missions, special promotions/events and cooperative partnering opportunities.
