CCT: Americans With Disabilities Act

Americans With Disabilities Act

Provisions of the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 provide special consideration for historic resources by establishing minimum requirements for physical access to properties listed or eligible for listing on the National Register of Historic Places as well as properties listed on the State Register of Historic Places.  The State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO) reviews and provides technical assistance for projects, which seek to use the minimum requirements for historic properties.  In cases where application of the minimum standards would threaten or destroy the significance of the resource, SHPO staff provide supporting documentation for that determination and assists in the development of alternative access.
