Round 1 Complete – Agency Now Accepting Applications for Round 2

The Connecticut Department of Economic and Community Development (DECD) today announced it has awarded more than $17 million in funding for various brownfield-related activities.

"Governor Malloy and I share the belief that cleaning up and redeveloping brownfields is one of the best ways we can help spur revitalization in our cities and towns.  As this round of funding demonstrates, the state is taking an aggressive approach to addressing this important issue—not only for the obvious benefits to the environment, but for the jobs and new economic opportunities it will create at the local level," said Catherine Smith, commissioner of DECD.

This round of awards includes $12,950,000 in loans and $4,575,000 in grants for such uses as commercial and industrial; market rate, affordable and workforce housing; and mixed-use developments with hotel, residential and retail space.

Funding is going directly to municipalities, businesses, developers, and regional development agencies for a wide range of activities, such as environmental assessment, planning, design, remediation, demolition, construction, and acquisition.  The state also offers a third party liability protection program for eligible brownfield redevelopers.

DECD’s Office of Brownfield Remediation and Development (OBRD), which is a one-stop resource for information on the programs and services available for brownfield redevelopment in Connecticut, is now accepting applications for the second round of funding.   The application deadline for the next round of funding is February 3, 2012.
